Before you can become a great travel photographer you need to have the right skills. It is not about having the best or most expensive gear, it is about knowing how to use what you have. Below are 5 ways to drastically improve your travel photography skills without breaking the bank. These are all things that anyone can learn and do right now.
How to improve your travel photography
Watch Youtube videos
The first thing to do is watch Youtube videos and tutorials because they are free and easy to access with an internet connection. Youtube is filled with videos on everything, from how to use your camera, how to pose people, how to take creative shots and also post production tips and tutorials.
Read books and magazines
Read photography magazines. Photography magazines like Australian Photography and Capture have interviews and also tips from internationally renown photographers from all genres. If you don’t want to pay for the magazine or pay for a subscription just check out the stuff they post on their websites. Read travel books. Read Lonely Planet guide books or any brand of guide book for that matter, they are filled with photographs. What is being published?
Here are a few books I have read and think you will also find useful.
Sign up for a course
One of the best ways to learn photography is to also sign up for a course. I learned the art of taking photos on 35mm and developing them in a dark room at school. After school, I studied photography at TAFE for the next two years. Take a photography course at TAFE, do photography workshops or short courses.
There are also countless amounts of travel photography courses available online, here are a few sites:
Follow great photographers on Instagram
Always follow your favourite photographers on Instagram and other social media handles so you are constantly being updated with their high quality, inspirational photos. Follow the best photographers in the travel genre because you will learn from them. See what they are doing and also do as they do.
Look for different shots
When photographing, take different shots, because you will stand out. Look for different angles of the same subject matter, look for a better viewpoint that no one else is using. Always get the cliche postcard shot but also do some scouting and finish with something unique.
Shoot as often as possible. You don’t have to travel overseas to do travel photography. Travel to the local national park, your local beach, your closest city. It doesn’t really matter. The more you shoot, the better you will become because practice makes perfect.
