How to choose the right destination for your first trip abroad

The first trip is always the hardest. It is both exciting and daunting and it is perfectly normal to feel a little bit anxious. The main thing to remember is everyone who has travelled internationally also started at zero, just like you. Most people who start travelling fall in love with it immediately. But, what if you want to go overseas for the very first time, how do you choose where to go? There are a few things to consider before booking anything, here are some ideas on how to choose the right destination for your first trip abroad.

We also posted a video on this same topic over on the WANDERWALKERS Youtube channel. If you would rather watch a video then you can watch the video below. Make sure you like the video and also subscribe to our channel.

The first thing you should consider is the language. This is your first trip, you might become extremely overwhelmed if the first place you go to is a country where no one speaks the same language as you. You should ease yourself into these sorts of situations, start by going to a country where you speak the same language. This will make it a lot easier for you to communicate to locals when you need directions, or when you’re looking for recommendations of places to see and things to do.

The second thing to consider is how far away is the destination? Maybe you have never been on a plane and because it is also your first international trip, you have probably never been on a long-haul flight either. Consider going to a place that is no longer than just a few hours away. Long haul flights to far-flung places could leave you tired, jet-lagged and feeling miserable from the moment you arrive at your destination.

What are your hobbies and passions?

Plan a trip around your hobbies and passions, if you’re a keen landscape photographer, head somewhere you can take amazing photos. If you’re a surfer, travel somewhere you can surf. This is a sure guarantee you will enjoy your trip and everything you see and do.

Travelling overseas can be expensive, but it doesn’t have to be. There are plenty of countries out there you can travel to that won’t break the bank. Some new travellers might think that the more you spend, the better the trip will be, this is definitely not true at all. You can travel to all kinds of amazing places very cheaply.

What is popular?

Consider heading to a place that is popular. An easy way to figure out where to go is to ask your friends, family and colleagues because there is a good chance they have been somewhere you haven’t been. What places are they raving about, a place they just seem to talk about all the time. Alternatively, what places do magazines and publications recommend and talk about all the time? What places do a lot of airlines fly to? What places always have deals advertised? Those are the sorts of places people are going to in huge numbers, so, therefore, they must be good.

My first Overseas Trip

For my first overseas trip in 2014, I went to New Zealand. A birthday present from Kayleigh, it was the perfect destination for my first trip abroad. The national language of New Zealand is English, the only language I know. It was my first time on a plane, just a short two and a half hour flight from Sydney to Queenstown. I planned outdoor activities and landscape photography around my trip because that is my passion. It was a relatively cheap place to travel to and it is also the most popular destination for Australians to travel to, outside of Australia.
