Since 2016 we have been eating a much more plant-based diet. We haven’t completely eliminated meat from our diets but we eat it far less than we use to. Eating less meat was important for us and it is something that we are extremely proud of. Below are the reasons why we eat less meat and why you should too.

The initial reason we chose to eat less meat was because of the cost. The cost of meat, compared to the cost of vegetables and grains like rice, is much more expensive. When Kayleigh and I moved out of home in 2016 we were extremely tight on money. We had multiple bills and rent to pay for the first time in our lives. One way in which we cut our costs down was by purchasing less meat. We found that our money could go much further when we limited our meat consumption

Meat is very expensive to purchase, so by eliminating it from your diet, or at least reducing your intake will put money back into your pocket.

It’s commonly known that cows produce methane which contributes to climate change, in fact, the gases can be even more potent than car emissions. However, there are other huge implications for the planet. Cows are resource-heavy animals, they need lots of land to roam around on and they consume large quantities of food and water on a daily basis. Due to this, millions of square kilometres of natural habitats worldwide have been torn down to accommodate these animals and the crops needed to feed them. Deforestation has had huge impacts on ecosystems and natural habitats.

Another thing that cows negatively affect is the quality of the soil. Soil degradation is a huge problem. The combination of deforestation and overgrazing destroys the quality of the topsoil. With soil degradation and cattle excrement also comes problems with polluted waters. Polluted waters from runoff clog up waterways resulting in water scarcity and can even destroy freshwater ecosystems.

These are just a few examples of the environmental problems. There are so many more consequences. The best thing you can do is to do more research on the issues and then reduce your intake of red meat.

We did say the initial reason we decided to consume less meat was because of cost, however, the environmental implications of cattle have been the biggest and most eye-opening. We are extremely dissatisfied with the current systems and industry standards in the agricultural sector worldwide.


Healthy lifestyle


Diets heavy in red meat and processed meats have been linked to increased health risks. Some of the health risks include a higher chance of obesity, heart disease and cancer. Evidence shows that those with lower intakes of red meat and processed meats have lower health risks. A general recommendation is that people should eat no more than two or three servings of meat per week.

Processed meat products contain high amounts of additives and chemicals which have the potential to contribute to health risks.

There is still a lot of debate about the health risks of eating red meat. However, there is no debate about the health benefits of eating a more plant-based diet. Kayleigh and I take the studies about the potential health risks of consuming too much red meat very seriously. We believe that eating more fruits, vegetables, lentils, grains and legumes is much healthier than eating a red meat-heavy diet.

Eating a plant-based diet is very important to us. Like we said earlier on, we haven’t completely eliminated meat, but it makes up only about 10% of our diet.
